Comparing Admission Control Architectures for Real-Time Ethernet
Industry 4.0 and Autonomous Driving are emerging resource-intensive distributed application domains that deal with open and evolving environments. These systems are subject to stringent resource, timing, and other non-functional constraints, as well as frequent reconfiguration. Thus, real-time behavior must not preclude operational flexibility. This combination is motivating ongoing efforts within the Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) standardization committee to define admission control mechanisms for Ethernet. Existing mechanisms in TSN, like those of AVB, its predecessor, follow a distributed architecture that favors scalability. Conversely, the new mechanisms envisaged for TSN (IEEE 802.1Qcc) follow a (partially) centralized architecture, favoring short reconfiguration latency. This paper shows the first quantitative comparison between distributed and centralized admission control architectures concerning reconfiguration latency. Here, we compare AVB against a dynamic real-time reconfigurable Ethernet technology with centralized management, namely HaRTES. Our experiments show a significantly lower latency using the centralized architecture. We also observe the dependence of the distributed architecture in the end nodes' performance and the benefit of having a protected channel for the admission control transactions. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI), in part by the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo

Audio Video Bridging Systems.
cr´ıticos; como la terminacion y la consistencia.[eng] In 2005 the IEEE created a Task Group to provide Ethernet
with new and enhanced services. This Task Group was named
Audio Video Bridging (AVB), and it was responsible to
provide Ethernet with soft real-time guarantees, while keeping
Ethernet’s strengths; namely low cost, high bandwidth, Internet
compatibility and plug&play functionality.
To achieve its goals, the AVB Task Group started three
projects. The first project was the IEEE Std 802.1AS, devoted
to clock synchronization; the second one was the IEEE Std
802.1Qav, which standardized the Credit-Based Shaper and
finally, the IEEE Std 802.1Qat standardized the Stream Reservation Protocol (SRP). Moreover, the group created a profile
that puts the aforementioned projects together, the IEEE Std
802.1BA-2011: Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Systems.
In 2012 the AVB Task Group broadened its scope to critical
systems, such as those used in automation, automotive and
avionics. The Task Group was renamed to Time-Sensitive
Networking (TSN) and the number of objectives was increased
to include (i) support for hard real-time traffic, (ii) support for
the reconfiguration of the traffic and (iii) support for highly
reliable applications by means of fault-tolerance.
From all the aforementioned projects, we can highlight the
SRP. It is key to provide real-time guarantees while supporting
the plug&play behaviour of Ethernet. This is so as it allows to
ensure that the traffic has enough resources to be transmitted
and it also allows to modify the traffic in run-time. In this dissertation we will study SRP from different perspectives and using different techniques. First, we will develop
and use an experimental setup to study the performance of
the protocol; which will give us a measure of the operational
flexibility that it provides to the systems that use it, that is,
its ability to support changes in traffic and its transmission
requirements in real time at run time. In this way, we will assess the suitability of the protocol to support adaptive systems;
which are able to automatically adjust their internal strategies,
to respond properly to changes in a dynamic environment.
Second, we will model SRP using the UPPAAL model
checker to check whether SRP provides properties that are
important for critical distributed systems; such as termination
and consistenc
Enhancing TSN Adoption by Industry : Tools to Support Migrating Ethernet-based Legacy Networks into TSN
New technologies present opportunities and challenges for industries. One major challenge is the ease, or even feasibility, of its adoption. The Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) standards offer a range of features relevant to various applications and are key for the transition to Industry 4.0. These features include deterministic zero-jitter, low-latency data transmission, transmission of traffic with various levels of time-criticality on the same network, fault tolerance mechanisms, and advanced network management allowing dynamic reconfiguration. This thesis aims to develop tools that enable the industry to adopt TSN easily and efficiently. Specifically, we create tools that facilitate the migration of legacy networks to TSN, enabling the preservation of most of the legacy systems and solutions while reducing costs and adoption time. Firstly, we introduce LETRA (Legacy Ethernet-based Traffic Mapping Tool), a tool for mapping Ethernet-based legacy traffic to the new TSN traffic classes. Secondly, we develop HERMES (Heuristic Multi-queue Scheduler), a heuristic Time-Triggered (TT) traffic scheduler that can meet the characteristics of legacy systems and provide quick results suitable for reconfiguration. Thirdly, we develop TALESS (TSN with Legacy End-Stations Synchronization), a mechanism to avoid adverse consequences caused by the lack of synchronization between legacy systems and TSN-based ones, as not all legacy systems need to support the TSN synchronization mechanisms. Finally, we improve Stream Reservation Protocol (SRP) to enhance Audio-Video Bridging (AVB) traffic configuration in terms of termination and consistency.
en estrella denominada Highly DiscriminatingMonitoring Star for CAN (HDMS-CAN).
HDMS-CAN.
Mapping cultural ecosystem services: a framework to assess the potential for outdoor recreation across the EU
Research on ecosystem services mapping and valuing has increased significantly in recent
years. However, compared to provisioning and regulating services, cultural ecosystem services have
not yet been fully integrated into operational frameworks. One reason for this is that
transdisciplinarity is required to address the issue, since by definition cultural services (encompassing
physical, intellectual, spiritual interactions with biota) need to be analysed from multiple perspectives
(i.e. ecological, social, behavioural). A second reason is the lack of data for large-scale assessments, as
detailed surveys are a main source of information. Among cultural ecosystem services, assessment of
outdoor recreation can be based on a large pool of literature developed mostly in social and medical
science, and landscape and ecology studies. This paper presents a methodology to include recreation in
the conceptual framework for EU wide ecosystem assessments (Maes et al., 2013), which couples
existing approaches for recreation management at country level with behavioural data derived from
surveys, and population distribution data. The proposed framework is based on three components: the
ecosystem function (recreation potential), the adaptation of the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum
framework to characterise the ecosystem service, and the distribution of potential demand in the EU.
Results show that 38% of the EU is characterized by a high recreation potential for outdoor recreation
which is easily accessible, and that such areas can host about 35.4% of potential demand for close-tohome
trips (<8 km). This proportion increases to 37.6% for long distance travelling (<80 km). The
analysis framework can be applied to quantify the availability of outdoor recreation potential as an
ecosystem service to EU citizens, to describe through country profiles differences in service provision
at regional level, and can be used as an input to land use planning processes
